Clinical Experience

I am a qualified, Health Professions Council Registered, Counselling Psychologist who has been working in the NHS for the past six years.

I have experience of working with individuals, couples and families experiencing a wide range difficulties including depression, low self confidence, panic, phobia, social anxiety, stress, postnatal depression, health anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic pain, bereavement, addiction, childhood trauma and relationship problems.

I am currently employed as a Senior Psychologist by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

What to Expect During Psychology Sessions

Your first session will last for fifty minutes and provide the opportunity for you to talk about your difficulties and their development. I'll ask you about you goals for therapy and we will discuss your therapy options. At the end of the appointment a treatment approach and plan will be recommended. However, there will be no obligation for you to commit to a course of therapy at the end of your first session and I will strongly encourage you to take some time to think about your therapy options.

I am trained and experienced in delivering three forms of psychological therapy; cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic psychotherapy and person centred counselling. Therefore the therapeutic approach offered will be based on discussion of a combination of your personal factors and preferences including your current difficulties, therapeutic goals, preferred style of working, length of treatment and the latest research evidence.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): The basic principle of CBT is that how we think can affect how we feel and how we behave. Using this approach we will work together to identify and understand your difficulties in terms of the relationship between your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. During the therapy you will be supported to identify your personal goals and the sessions will focus on developing the practical skills and understanding you need to make the changes necessary to achieve your goals. CBT is a time-limited therapy that requires your active participation both inside and outside the sessions.

CBT is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) as an effective treatment for the following difficulties; depression (mild to severe), generalised anxiety disorder, panic, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias (including social phobia and agoraphobia) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). CBT has also been shown to be effective for difficulties such as stress, bulimia, anger, low self confidence and chronic pain.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: this therapy provides the opportunity for you to think and talk about your feelings about yourself and others, including your family and those closest to you. During the sessions I will help you to identify connections between the things you do, say and feel in the present and how they may be related to your past experiences. Learning to understand the connections between your past and present can help you start making decisions based on what you want or need now, rather than on what your past experiences drive you to do. Psychodynamic psychotherapy can last from a few months to several years depending on the complexity of the difficulties.

Person Centred Counselling: this type of counselling provides a supportive, non-judgemental, confidential space in which you can explore your difficulties and find your own answers and solutions. The person centred approach understands the individual to be their own best authority, who given the right conditions, will be able to grow and develop to their full potential. During sessions you will be invited to explore all your thoughts and feelings, positive or negative. My role will be to try and accurately understand your view of the world without offering judgement or placing any expectation of change.
